HEICVSWEBP

Apple vs Google. H.265 vs VP8. Which modern format provides the best quality at the smallest size?

The Verdict

**HEIC is better for Photos.** It retains slightly more detail/texture. **WebP is better for the Web.** It is supported by all browsers (HEIC is not).

Compression Efficiency

Winner: HEIC

In our tests, HEIC is about 10-15% smaller than WebP for the same perceptual quality. H.265 is an incredibly strong compression algorithm.

Web Support

Winner: WEBP

WebP works on Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. HEIC *only* works on Safari (and native Apple apps). You cannot use HEIC on a general website.

Encoding Speed

Winner: WEBP

Saving a WebP is fast. Saving an HEIC takes significant CPU power. For servers converting images on the fly, WebP is cheaper.
