GIFVSPNG
GIF is the king of memes, but APNG is better in every technical way. Why does nobody use APNG? We explain.
The Verdict
**APNG destroys GIF.** It supports millions of colors and partial transparency (no white halos!). However, file sizes can be larger, and support on very old systems is spotty.
Quality
Winner: PNG
GIF looks grainy (256 colors). APNG allows for cinematic quality animations with full 24-bit color. It is literally a moving PNG.
Transparency
Winner: PNG
GIF is binary (on/off). APNG supports alpha transparency, meaning you can have smooth drop shadows in your animation.
Compatibility
Winner: GIF
GIF works on a potato. APNG works on all modern browsers, but some older chat apps treat it as a static image.
